Excellent post Jim! I totally agree, before jumping into something new, it would be so much better for a group to take the time to assess their current and past fundraising efforts. Brainstorm all the ways to improve ... then plan it out on the calendar for the next year. That is one pitfall that can be easy to fall into - even when you have the ideas to improve your programs if you don't plan it out in advance it won't get done.

"A well-run event is oftentimes enough to distinguish your organization from another."

The way an event is run also reflects upon the organization itself. If the fundraiser is run poorly then people may get an impression that the charity itself is also run poorly. An event attendee's interaction with the organization's staff and volunteers also leaves a lasting impression. This may be your first or only interaction with potential supporters! Make it a positive one.
