Penny Drive Fundraiser Aims for $10,000

Many schools hold a penny drive fundraiser to benefit various causes. One school decided to aim for one million pennies…

“Million Dollar Baby,” a project instituted this year by language arts teachers Amy Rafano and Mark Amatucci, will show students what 1 million looks like while fostering a sense of community and making a difference. Half of the $10,000 collected will be donated to the North Brunswick Food Bank and the other half will be kept in-house at Linwood to supply materials.

Penny drive fundraisers are good for elementary and junior high schools. All students are able to participate since it only requires that students bring pocket change, at least a few pennies. The school just needs to send home a flyer with each student letting parents know the details about the penny drive.

The major work involved with a penny drive fundraiser is counting the pennies! If the school is counting contributions by class or homeroom, then someone from that class (the teacher or students) must count the pennies before turning in to the school office. Then the office will likely need to re-count before turning in to the bank.

Fun Prom Fundraising Event

Are you looking for a fun prom fundraising event idea?  One school is hosting a unique volleyball tournament - teams must come in costume to play!

Unlike other tournaments, Digs for Prom is also giving out prizes to the team with the most unique uniforms. Teams are encouraged to come dressed as Santa’s elves, little island girls with grass skirts, etc. — the more creative the better. The tournament is a fundraising event sponsored by the Guam High School Junior Class Council.

This would be a fun prom fundraising event - both for the players and the spectators.  There’s a variety of ways that this event could be customized for your high school.  How about an in-costume dodge ball tournament?  Basketball, or hockey (broom ball)?  Don’t forget to sell concessions, t-shirts and other fun stuff to raise more funds for the prom at an event like this.

School Auction a Success

An Elementary School in Glenn Dale, Maryland recently held its third annual live and silent auction. The school auction benefited the teacher appreciaton day, school assemblies, and the arts program.

More than 50 businesses and families contributed items, which were auctioned off to help raise $8,500 for the school.

Silent auction items included themed baskets, created by the different classes, evenings out, clothing and social time with all of the teachers. For the live auction, parents and staff bid on hotel stays, flying lessons and sports tickets. The first live auction item, a group dinner at the Marrakech Moroccan restaurant in the District, sold for $475.

As this great success story shows, annual events have advantages. Volunteers and attendees look forward to the event and participation grows each year. Many of the same businesses who donated to the Glenn Dale auction in previous years donated once again to this year’s event.

What if you had an auction and thousands of people came?
