Spice Up the Traditional Dinner Fundraiser

A Florida Elementary school decided to switch the menu of its dinner fundraiser from spaghetti to Mexican fare. But the cuisine was not the only change in this event. The purpose was expanded beyond just the fundraiser into a cultural festival and outreach.

Manatee Elementary School is dropping its annual fundraising spaghetti supper and replacing it with an Oct. 19 dinner to honor Hispanic cultures.

It’s a three-pronged effort: celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month; help Hispanic parents feel more welcome at school; and provide families a window onto other cultures.

When planning a school dinner event, consider how you can expand the purpose beyond just the fundraising aspect. The result will be a richer, more meaningful event that will be well attended.

School Fundraising: Is it Always About the Money?

Is raising money the only reason to have a school carnival or other event?  No way!  School events can be great community builders.  They offer a chance for families to do something together that’s fun and out of the ordinary.

A Santa Clarita, California school held an event at a local bookstore that was not a huge financial success but reaped many other rewards:

Santa Clarita Elementary School may not have made a lot of money during its annual fundraiser, but school officials say it were a huge success anyway as the event promoted literacy and got families to spend time together.

Kids and parents were able to watch their teachers read books aloud Wednesday evening at a local bookstore, with a portion of book sales going to the school.

Get Grants Alert

Last time I posted about the Hamburger Helper grant program and I was reminded about Grants Alert.  This is a site that frequently posts information about grants just for education.  It’s a great website and service that schools, teachers and parents should check often for grants.

In fact I’ve spoken with Joe Mizereck, founder and publisher of Grants Alert and am quite impressed with his drive and dedication to helping improve education in our country. He has a strong background in education and knows first hand that funding is crucial to providing quality education.  Grants are one way to help make that happen.

Anyway, check out Grants Alert, you’ll be glad you did.
